Age Limit
- Minimum Age: 21 years
- Maximum Age: 30 years
- Age relaxation: SC/ST up to 5 years, OBC up to 3 years, PwBD up to 10 years, and as per government rules.
Educational Qualification
Candidates must hold a degree in Engineering from a recognised University/Institution. Equivalent qualifications include:
- Sections A and B of the Institution of Engineers (India)
- Degree/diploma from a recognised foreign University/Institution
- Graduate Membership Examination of Institution of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineers
- Associate Membership Examination (Aeronautical Society of India)
- Graduate Membership Examination of Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London (post-1959)

Salary & Allowances
Selected candidates will be appointed under Level-10 of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix with attractive allowances.
- Entry Level (Junior Engineer): ₹15,600 – ₹39,100 + Grade Pay ₹5,400; In-hand: approx. ₹55,000 – ₹65,000/month.
- Senior Levels: Pay and allowances increase with promotions up to Apex Scale (₹80,000 – ₹90,000 fixed).
Selection Process
The UPSC ESE selection process involves three stages:
- Preliminary Exam: Objective type (General Studies & Aptitude + Engineering Discipline).
- Main Exam: Descriptive papers in the chosen Engineering discipline.
- Personality Test/Interview: 200 marks.
Total Marks: 1300.

- Ensuring compliance with technical and safety standards.
- Managing public sector engineering services across railways, defence, telecom, power, and other key sectors.
