Age Limit

  • Minimum Age: 21 years
  • Maximum Age: 30 years
  • Age relaxation: SC/ST up to 5 years, OBC up to 3 years, PwBD up to 10 years, and as per government rules.

Educational Qualification

Candidates must hold a degree in Engineering from a recognised University/Institution. Equivalent qualifications include:

  • Sections A and B of the Institution of Engineers (India)
  • Degree/diploma from a recognised foreign University/Institution
  • Graduate Membership Examination of Institution of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineers
  • Associate Membership Examination (Aeronautical Society of India)
  • Graduate Membership Examination of Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London (post-1959)

Application Fee

  • General/OBC/EWS: ₹200
  • SC/ST/PwBD: Exempted
  • Female Candidates: Exempted

Salary & Allowances

Selected candidates will be appointed under Level-10 of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix with attractive allowances.

  • Entry Level (Junior Engineer): ₹15,600 – ₹39,100 + Grade Pay ₹5,400; In-hand: approx. ₹55,000 – ₹65,000/month.
  • Senior Levels: Pay and allowances increase with promotions up to Apex Scale (₹80,000 – ₹90,000 fixed).

Selection Process

The UPSC ESE selection process involves three stages:

  • Preliminary Exam: Objective type (General Studies & Aptitude + Engineering Discipline).
  • Main Exam: Descriptive papers in the chosen Engineering discipline.
  • Personality Test/Interview: 200 marks.

Total Marks: 1300.

Job Responsibilities or Nature of Work

  • Designing, supervising, and maintaining infrastructure projects.
  • Ensuring compliance with technical and safety standards.
  • Managing public sector engineering services across railways, defence, telecom, power, and other key sectors.
  • Advising government departments on technical and engineering matters.
